the former Southie crime boss. Carr is the author of the New York
Times bestsellers The Brothers Bulger and Hitman. He is a celebrated
Boston Herald columnist and the host of a hugely popular radio program

the real killers still out there? Sherman is an award winning
journalist and bestselling author of five books including Search for
the Strangler, Bad Blood and The Finest Hours. Both Bad Blood and The
Finest Hours are now in development as major motion pictures.

Immigration and Jihadists

So let me get this straight. Governor Deval Patrick said today that he had been briefed by the Joint Terrorist Task Force on the pending FBI raids that led to arrests of two men - who are believed to be in the country illegally - days ago. He announced that he was aware that a house in Watertown would be the subject of a federal search warrant and a gas station in Brookline. But our Governor just two days ago said anyone who was worried about illegal immigrants in the Commonwealth, in Arizona, or anywhere else were just "stirring up fear." The remarks, made in an interview with the Globe that ran two days ago, seem outlandish considering that three men who sympathize with extremists who are accused of having ties to murderous terrorist groups have now been arrested in Massachusetts. One man was a pharmacist at a Walgreens in a leafy suburb - when he wasn't trying to join that jihad at a terrorist training. Now two men who the feds have linked to a money trail tied to the Times Square attack have been arrested in Brookline and Watertown. The men arrested today are being held in "immigration violations." One of the two is a cabbie. Interesting. Doesn't a cabbie need a hackney license. Oh wait. How about a driver's license. This is why the critics of the Arizona immigration law - and State Representative Jeff Perry's amendment to the budget that narrowly failed that would have required people to prove citizenship before they got taxpayer-funded benefits - have some explaining to do.It is not "stirring up fears" to be concerned about homeland security. Today's arrests exemplify that.

Doing Business With Arizona

City Council President Mike Ross insisted that my assertion that Boston could be impacted financially by the asinine resolution that was passed by his fellow Boston lawmakers that will force Beantown from doing business with Arizona because of its crackdown on illegals was "preposterous."Really Ross? Because Tom Constantine, a retired Marine and former Massachusetts State Trooper, canceled a large graduation dinner he planned to host for his daughter in the North End."Ten of us are now going to dinner south of the city,'' Constantine told me. "If Ross thinks this idiot stunt will have no impact economically on Boston he should think again."That's exactly what Mike Virostko of Townsend said. He was excited about taking his wife out in the city on Sunday for Mother's Day."Boston does not want to do much direct business with Arizona so the vote is symbolic or "feel good." I will follow the City Council's lead in that respect. I was planning to bring my wife to the North End for dinner and to walk the city. I will be going someplace else this weekend,'' he said. "Though this is small money, it is symbolic."What about Marine's Week which is taking place on the Boston Common until Saturday. Bill Sharpe was bringing his family in to salute the Marines. They are still coming."But I won't be spending any money eating out,'' Sharpe said.I guess my prediction that Boston would be hurt by the cheap political stunt far worse than Arizona would be was not so "preposterous" after all.

The Michele McPhee Show can be heard on 96.9 FM WTKK weeknights 6 to 10 p.m

Arizona Boycott In Boston

It was a secret vote. No public hearing. No paperwork. There was just a question: Do you support a boycott of the state of Arizona because of its crackdown on illegals. And the Boston City Council voted unanimously - albeit in anonymity - to boycott Arizona. Off the top of my head I can't think any any business in Boston that is dependent on anything out of Arizona. Agave sweetner maybe because it is made from cactus juice? Rattle snake venom? The Arizona-based chain store Cold Stone Creamery has crappy ice cream anyway. But there are plenty of people who buy products from Massachusetts. Hordes who travel to Boston to walk down the Freedom Trail and eat out in the North End. Tourists who drink beer at the Black Rose and folks who travel into Beantown from outside of Suffolk County. Sam Adams is sold across the country. So are Boston baked beans. And Necco wafers. And marshmallow Fluff. Imagine if there was a Boston boycott because the City Council here cannot do their own jobs but want to tell law enforcment in other states how to do theirs."This is not a binding resolution,'' City Council President Mike Ross told me tonight during his appearance on the show. "We are sending a message."  That's for sure. The message is a slap in the face to the deputy sheriff in Arizona who was shot by drug smugglers with machine guns Friday afternoon. It's a slap in the face to the people of Arizona who are law-abiding business owners. And it is a kick in the jimmies to people like me who want safe streets. Clean streets. Pot-hole free steets. Street lights.I want my library in Orient Heights East Boston to stay open. Our teachers to stay employeed. What a disgrace.

The Michele McPhee Show can be heard on 96.9 FM WTKK weeknights 6 to 10 p.m.

What I Want From My City Councilors?

Clean streets in East Boston. Businesses brought back to Downtown Crossing. Support for police details and the Quinn Bill. I want them to enforce the existing ice cream truck legislation and collect the fines owed to us by slumlords that have allowed trash to attract rats. Do you know what I don't want my highly-paid City Councilors to do? Waste taxpayer time with feable attempts to change national or international policy.

City of Boston residents have already tolerated a resolution to end the war in Iraq. Okay City Councilor Chuck Turner - the brainchild of that complete nonsense regarding thew ar in Iraq - you are not a federal lawmaker. In fact, you are an accused law breaker who was photographed by the FBI with a fistful of $100 bills that feds are calling a bribe.

And now we have Felix Arroyo Jr., who was elected to the City Council despite the problems his father had in his City Council seat (just as Chuck Turner was reelected after he was dragged out of City Hall in handcuffs by FBI agents), with the latest insult to the taxpayer: he wants the city to stop doing business with the state of Arizona because of its crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Here is the flag woman who complained of harassment last week on the front page of the Globe "hard at work". This is what $53.25 an hour buys the taxpayer.

Letter: Wakefield High School Superintendent

This letter from Wakefield High School Superintendent should be titled: "How Wakefield High School tries to explain the firing of a lifelong veteran who asked a teenager to respect the American flag - a symbol that his son died fighting to uphold." This is a complete outrage:

April 25, 2010

Dear Wakefield High School Community,

I hope you have enjoyed your vacation with your families. I feel compelled to make you aware of an incident at Wakefield High School that has been portrayed badly in the media. I declined to comment earlier this week in response to a letter to the editor of the Wakefield Daily Item by a substitute teacher, consistent with the School Department’s policy of not commenting on matters that affect its personnel or individual students. However, as there has been such an extensive misrepresentation since then, I believe it is necessary to be clear and respectful of all the parties involved.

During the month of March, a 5-minute homeroom class had just completed saying the Pledge of Allegiance.  As the students sat down, one girl who had stood for and recited the Pledge of Allegiance, said to the pupil sitting next to her that she had learned in social studies class that students have a Constitutional right to decide whether to stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance. The girl was not talking to the teacher, not creating a disturbance, nor was she disrespectful in any way. Upon overhearing part of the conversation, the substitute teacher reacted by berating her angrily in front of the class. The substitute shouted at the student while the girl sat there with her head down. This incident was witnessed first hand by a member of our full-time faculty who was in the same classroom during the incident and subsequently notified the high school principal.
